Description

Athletics have played an increasingly important role in Student Life at the University of South Carolina. Intramural sports were very popular in the 19th century, with football and baseball becoming intercollegiate sports at the turn of the 20th century. Since 1904, the students at the University of South Carolina have identified themselves as Gamecocks. With the passing of Title Nine in 1972, women's athletics have grown substantially. Baseball, basketball, soccer, and equestrian have become successful programs at the University allowing for new definitions of the student as athlete and fan. This exhibit will examine the dynamic role of athletics at the University and how it has impacted the students’ college experience.
